The UFC has basically been ignoring fans and their opinions about what they want to see. Instead, they have been pushing for this mega crossover fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor that we all know isn’t going to happen. Since my mind isn’t in a fantasy world, I’m going to tell you 5 fights that we need to happen this year.
Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm 2
It doesn’t take a UFC expert to see that Ronda got demolished in her last fight against Amanda Nunes. Rousey’s demise ultimately started after her loss against Holly Holm. She could take the easy way out and just retire, but she knows that we all want to see her in action again. As for Holm, she’s on a 3 fight losing streak. The UFC is known for giving unproductive fighters the pink slip. Holm’s time in the UFC may be coming to an end soon if she doesn’t turn it around soon. If this fight was to happen, it would give the winner a huge confidence boost. For the loser, it may prove to be the reality check that says it is time for retirement.
Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones 2
It has been 2 years since these two fought. This matchup was on of the best fights I have ever seen. Different circumstances like Cormier injuries and Jones’s suspensions have derailed every sequel plan thus far. No one has pushed Jones quite like Cormier did. Jones suspension can be lifted as early as July. If we don’t get this fight this year, the UFC would be robbing us. If we wait any longer for this fight, these two may be out of their prime.
Stipe Miocic vs. Cain Velasquez
Stipe Miocic has taken out all of the big dogs in the Heavyweight division besides Velasquez. Miocic is scheduled to fight Junior Dos Santos at UFC 211. If he successfully defends his title, there’s no reason why this fight shouldn’t happen. Velasquez has been on his game as of late winning 6 of his last 7 fights. These two are knockout artist and if Dana White gave us this, it would have “slobberknocker” written all over it.
Anderson Silva vs. Georges St-Pierre
Talk about fights that should have happened a long time ago. This fight is about 8 years overdue. If this were to happen though, you would not hear me complain about it. Silva did recently pick up a win, but he has been fighting for a long time, and his retirement coming soon is inevitable. For GSP, he just posted a video on social media documenting his return. We haven’t seen him in action since 2013, but he has not lost a fight since 2007. This could be the ultimate ride off into the sunset for one of these two. We may be disappointed in the timing, but we all know that it’s better late than never.
Conor McGregor vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov
Conor McGregor is the hottest name in the business right now. No way he wouldn’t make this list with anyone that he fought. McGregor has been bouncing around in different weight classes, but he has seen to have found his place in the lightweight division. Outside of Nate Diaz, he hasn’t had much competition. Khabib could change all of that. He hasn’t lost a fight yet. His resume shows that he is more than deserving for a shot at the Lightweight title. Not only is this realistic, this fight would be more lit than Mayweather-McGregor anyways.
Honorable Mention: Cris Cyborg vs. Amanda Nunes
The UFC has given us great cards in the past, and I appreciate that, but they have also given us the short end of the stick on multiple occasions. These 5 fights are not only sure to bring in viewers, but the big bucks too. Make UFC fans happy and stop getting involved in the boxing world.
